Vaping among junior high and high school students in Montería, Colombia: results of a quantitative study

Abstract

Objective: To estimate the lifetime prevalence of vaping in this population, as well as the sociodemographic factors associated with its use, motivations for initiation, sources of acquisition, and risk perception. Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study design was used. The sample consisted of 174 students who completed a structured 12-item questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data and assess the association between vaping and sociodemographic variables. Results: The lifetime prevalence of vaping was 46.55%, which was higher than that reported in previous national studies, suggesting greater exposure and vulnerability in this population. A statistically significant association was found between vaping and age (p = 0.0002), with the 14–15-year age group being the most frequently represented. Curiosity was the main reason for initiating vaping (74%), and friends were the primary source of acquisition (72.84%). This finding raises concerns about the effectiveness of measures aimed at restricting minors’ access to these devices. Conclusions: The use of these devices in this population represents a public health concern due to its high prevalence and early initiation. A potential response involves the immediate strengthening of sales restrictions and the implementation of risk education programs through coordinated efforts between health and education authorities.
